England are “optimistic” that Sophie Ecclestone will be fit to play in Wednesday’s Women’s World Cup semi-final against South Africa after suffering a shoulder injury.
Left-arm spinner Ecclestone, the world’s best bowler in one-day internationals, fell awkwardly on her shoulder while bowling during the win over New Zealand on Sunday in the final group stage match.
She was only able to bowl four balls in the match, although she did pick up a wicket, before she had to leave the field for treatment.
The England and Wales Cricket Board said: “The results of an MRI on Ecclestone’s left shoulder indicate a minor injury to the joint adjacent to the collarbone.”
He added: “Her condition will continue to be evaluated before the semi-final match against South Africa.”
Ecclestone is England’s leading wicket-taker in the World Cup so far, having registered 12 scalps alongside fellow left-arm spinner Lynsey Smith.
“We expect it to be OK,” captain Nat Sciver-Brent told BBC Sport.
“Sophie is a big player for us so it will be great for her to be on the field tomorrow.”
England finished second behind Australia at the end of the group stage and will face the Proteas in Guwahati at 09:30 GMT, having demolished Laura Wolfhardt’s side in the opening match of the tournament by being bowled out for just 69.
India and Australia play in the second semi-final in Navi Mumbai on Thursday but rain is forecast throughout the week. Reserve days are in effect for all knockout matches.
