OpenAI is teasing a series of upcoming updates to its popular AI-generated video app, Sora, which recently reached the top of the App Store after launching in late September. The app, which remains No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada, will offer video editing tools, give users the ability to create “cameos” of pets and other objects, improve social features, and more. Additionally, the company says an Android version of the app will be “coming soon.”
The announcement was made on X by Sora president Bill Peebles, who said the new creation tools will arrive in the next few days. These include the ability to turn pets and other objects, such as βa favorite stuffed toy and almost anything else,β into distinctive images.
The term “cameo” refers to Sora’s feature where users can create AI personas of themselves after providing the app with a recorded video as a reference file. These cameos can be shared with friends and others, allowing them to create videos using your AI character.
“We expect people to score a lot of crazy new cameos with this feature. To make them easier to find, we’re updating the generation UI to show the latest trending cameos in real time,” Peebles wrote on X.
Additionally, he says the app will offer basic video editing features, starting with stitching multiple clips together. More tools will be added over time. An updated social experiment is also underway, which will add new ways to use Sora with friends. These channels may include dedicated channels for a university, company, sports club, and more.
The company says it is working to reduce excessive generational moderation, which some users have complained is too strict, and improve overall app performance.
Although the app is currently listed on the Google Play Store for pre-registration, OpenAI has yet to share a launch date for its arrival. Peebles says the live stream should happen “soon,” but did not provide further details.

Third-party app store data from Appfigures estimates that Sora has seen about 2 million downloads since its launch less than a month ago. This number is notable, given that the app remains invite-only and is only launching in the US and Canada.
