✅ **What You’ll Learn**:
Donald Trump may be remaking the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts into a collection of his own self-reflections, but the writer on South Park, the TV series that reflects the administration’s obsessions and predilections better than any political pundit, has bought the rights to trumpkennedycenter.org.
Toby Morton, a writer and television producer who worked on the long-running and disgraced sitcom, said he bought the domain in August after predicting that the president would change the name from the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center after he installed himself as president and filled the board with loyalists.
The name change caused turmoil at the institution, with several artists suddenly withdrawing from scheduled concerts in protest. The name change itself is being challenged in the courts.
In an email to The New York Times, Morton said that for the past five years he has been “taking over domains associated with politicians and authoritarian figures and turning them into frank and often uncomfortable reflections of what they actually represent.”
“I’ve been doing this kind of work for years, building websites that reflect and expose political power by using its own language against it,” he added.
Visitors to trumpkennedycenter.org find an advertisement for a show by “Epstein’s Dancers” but not a schedule of the center’s lineup of classical music, jazz, theater and ballet.
“Beginning January 2026, TrumpKennedyCenter.org enters a new era of fidelity, unity, and legacy power,” a message on the website said. “We exist to preserve what must endure, to honor what must not be questioned, and to bring together those who understand that greatness is not chosen, it is recognized.”
The real website, kennedy-center.org, was identified as “Trump Kennedy Center,” but the web address itself was not changed.
Morton isn’t the only one looking for fun. trump-kennedycenter.org was taken over by a group of British satirists around the same time, advertising their own brand of comedic misinformation.
The website advertises “Saucy Jeff – a Rock’n’Roll Musical”, describing it as “a new adaptation of the rock opera Saucy Jack by St Hubbins/Smalls, [which] This musical about friendship and sex crimes brings a live-action update in the new location of Little Saint James, featuring Jeffrey Epstein as the protagonist.
Comedy, more than anger, has often proven a better counter to political madness. South Park made its comedic bones parodying the excesses of woke culture.
But during Trump’s second term, the series has shifted forcefully into a parody of Trump, who in recent episodes is expecting a baby with a caricature of Satan who believes the new White House ballroom will serve as a nursery.
South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker made clear last year that a Trump administration was inevitable. “It’s not that we’ve become completely political,” Parker told the New York Times. “Politics has become popular culture.”
Morton told the outlet that his view on changing the name of the Trump Kennedy Center was that it was art in itself, perhaps in the same way that Lenin’s tomb in Red Square could be better than any piece of installation art could ever hope to be.
“It’s almost a performance art in itself,” Morton told the outlet. “The irony of someone who has openly mocked artists, rejected culture and shown nothing but contempt for the arts, now positioning himself as their host, is an astonishing kind of irony.”
