SpaceX is headed toward what is expected to be the largest initial public offering ever next month, and has now received a major boost from the Trump administration.

The U.S. Space Force announced Friday that it will award SpaceX $4.16 billion as part of a contract to build satellites that will be part of the air and missile defense system that President Trump calls β€œGolden Dome.”

The announcement comes after a separate contract awarded by Space Force to Elon Musk earlier this week worth $2.29 billion. This contract involves SpaceX building a communications network in low Earth orbit.

The contracts reinforce a revelation detailed in SpaceX’s IPO filing announced last week: The company relies heavily on government contracts. A fifth of SpaceX’s revenue in 2025 came from government agencies.

Musk spent about $300 million to help elect Trump and has remained close to the president. But SpaceX has also dominated the launch market over the past decade; It’s no surprise that the federal government continues to turn to SpaceX for contracts like this. However, the company warned investors in its IPO filing that its β€œbusiness with government entities is subject to changes in policies, priorities, regulations, mandates and rules.”
