Last summer, she wrote to Ofcom to express her “deep concern about the recent wave of racist and sexist abuse” directed at the England women’s football team on social media.
“Sports should always be a place where everyone feels safe and welcome,” Boardman said.
“These are values worth defending. When a place undermines that, walking away is not a weakness — it’s a responsibility.”
“Last summer, we called for action on the horrific sexual and racist abuse our lionesses are subjected to. Along with these actions, we must make choices about where we show up as an organization and where we don’t.”
BBC Sport revealed last month that more than 2,000 highly offensive social media posts – including death and rape threats – were sent about managers and players in the Premier League and Women’s Super League in one weekend, with 82% of the offensive posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“X has become a less effective way for us to do our work,” Boardman said. “The tone of the conversation has become increasingly divisive and reductive.
“We recognize that some people and organizations believe that staying in difficult places and challenging harmful narratives from within is the right approach.
“For Sport England, moving away from X is the right decision. It aligns with our values, supports our commitment to women and girls, and allows us to focus our efforts where they can have the greatest positive impact.
“Tech companies — especially X — must take greater responsibility for the environments they create and the content they amplify.”
BBC Sport has contacted X for comment.
The BBC previously referred to a statement published by its security account at the beginning of January which read: “Anyone who uses Grok or prompts them to create illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they uploaded illegal content.”
