✅ Here’s what you’ll learn:

Spotify has been spotted developing a ‘SongDNA’ feature that would allow users to discover music by credits – writers, collaborators, singers, engineers, songwriters, producers, composers and others who have worked on a particular track or album.

The feature was discovered in the app’s code by reverse engineer Jin Manchun Wong, who was able to create screenshots of how SongDNA would appear in the app. Based on its findings, SongDNA will offer a visual experience where you can essentially step through the credits, see how people relate to each other, and explore their different works.

For example, Wong showed how one artist, Ri Ami from the cast of “KPop Demon Hunters,” lent her voice to tracks other than those in the film.

If Spotify releases the feature publicly, it could pose a challenge to the interactive credits of streaming service TIDAL, which also lets you explore music through the contributors behind the songs you love. The addition could be useful to music industry professionals looking for collaborators, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about the people who work behind the scenes in creating music.

Shortly after the screenshots were posted on social media, Wong said the Spotify app had been updated to remove references to the SongDNA feature. Reached for comment, Spotify declined to share further details but did issue a denial.

Following Wong’s post, another reverse engineer and technologist, Chris Messina, was able to confirm the existence of SongDNA by finding references to the feature within the app’s code. According to Messina, lines of code indicate that the feature could be used to reveal the network of contributors behind songs, allowing users to explore more of their work.

While some have wondered if SongDNA would be Spotify’s answer to Pandora’s Music Genome Project, it appears that’s not quite the case. The Genome Project uses hundreds of different details or “traits” that correspond to a particular characteristic of music to classify pieces and determine their relatedness.

SongDNA, at least for now, seems to be more focused on just the people behind the music, rather than the music itself.
