Actor Stellan Skarsgård has revealed that he suffered a stroke three years ago, and filming has become more difficult since then.

Speaking to Vulture to promote Sentimental Value, actor Joachim Trier, an Oscar contender for a filmmaker struggling to connect with his daughters, said he fell ill between filming Denis Villeneuve’s two Dune sequels, as well as seasons of the Star Wars Andor franchise.

“It was perfect timing,” he said, adding that his language became “weaker” as a result, and that he needed a hearing aid for Dune: Part Two.

“Suddenly, I couldn’t remember names,” Skarsgård said. “I cannot follow an idea or present an argument that extends over several sentences and gets to the heart of the matter […] This is very frustrating. But on the other hand, I’m alive. “I can work.”

Skarsgård, 74, said he “is not afraid of death, but I am afraid that I will not be able to live. That is fear.”

He continued, “I feel like I’m living under the sword now.” “Because I’ve had a miserable life. And I’m 74, which is already extra time.”

He added that feeling bored is still a source of concern for him and his offspring.

“With all eight of my children, one thing I’m afraid of every time I have a new baby… is that they’re boring. Fortunately, none of them were boring.”

A number of Skarsgard’s children – including Alexander, Belle and Gustav – are actors, but he rejected the idea that they were successful because of their father.

“I consider myself an illegitimate father, because I get a lot of good will and probably jobs because of them,” he said. He and Alexander had his and Alexander’s films screened at the Telluride Film Festival in late August, he continued, recalling that when his eldest son exited the sentimental value show “he came out, face-palmed, and hugged me.”

Earlier this year, it was announced that the director had been transferred to a care facility, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
