💡 Here’s what you’ll learn:

Norwegian director Joachim Trier leads the race to win the European Film Awards, with five nominations in the main categories for family drama Sentimental Value.

The Cannes Grand Prix winner is nominated for Best European Film, Best Screenplay and Best Director, as well as Best Actor and Best Actress nominations for Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Rainsvi.

In the film, which will be released in cinemas in the UK and other European territories next December, Skarsgård plays a famous film director trying to repair relations with his two estranged daughters.

Spanish director Olivier Lax’s techno thriller “Sirat,” set in the Moroccan desert, is the favorite with four nominations. German director Masha Schilinski’s The Sound of Falling, which explores generational trauma on a farm in rural Brandenburg, has been nominated for three awards, the same as Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, this year’s Palme d’Or winner.

The 15-film shortlist for this year’s best European film includes five animated feature films and five documentaries, including Nazi collaborator Leni Riefenstahl’s portrait of Andrés Wiel and Igor Bezinovic’s Fiume o Morte!, which Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw hailed as “a proto-fascist passport to Pimlico”.

The European Film Awards, which are often described as Europe’s answer to the Oscars, are overseen by the European Film Academy and were unveiled at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain on Tuesday.

The awards ceremony was previously held in December, and will be held in Berlin on January 17 next year, closer to the peak of American awards seasons in an attempt to increase exposure among European audiences.

At last year’s awards ceremony, held in the Swiss city of Lucerne, French director Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez achieved a near-total sweep, taking four out of five top prizes.
