💡 Here’s what you’ll learn:
Tandy has a no-nonsense item in his armory.
“Steve is a man with a thick skin and a tough attitude,” said Wales and Lions winger legend Shane Williams.
He added: “He’s a no-nonsense guy who is exactly what Wales need. He will make the team mentally strong and difficult to beat.”
“He needs to instill that in the team, they are good players, they need to forget the last 24 months.
He added, “The matter cannot be solved overnight, and he is realistic about what he wants to achieve. I have complete confidence in him.”
Tandy’s style is also practical and he has created a relatable coach persona.
Gloucester center Max Llewellyn spoke about how Tandy phoned players before teams were announced to keep in touch.
Prop Archie Griffin says Tandy is “not a master teacher type,” trying to get more involved with the players and not be divisive.
Wales assistant coach Danny Wilson, who worked with Tandy in Scotland, described him as a “nurturing and relationships coach” who has already “made his mark on the environment”.
Tandy also changed the team’s work week.
“I’ve been fortunate to have experiences in different environments, so I’ve been looking at things and asking for feedback on how the players are feeling,” Tandy said.
“It’s not a reflection of the past, it’s about where we want to go to change things and make things feel different.”
Tandy also moved the Wales dressing room to the Principality Stadium, a stadium where Wales had not won in nine matches and over two years.
“It’s not about the lines, it’s about the scope of redeveloping and changing this landscape and how we see that working,” Tandy said.
“It wasn’t a matter of not winning for a certain period of time, but if we change things and learn differently, that has to be countered on the pitch.”
