This tech stock got a boost thanks to a new bet by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway

Shares of Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) rose on Monday after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) disclosed a new stake in the tech giant.

Alphabet shares rose more than 5% in recent trading, at a time when the broader technology sector lost ground.

Berkshire bought about 17.8 million shares of Alphabet stock in the third quarter, its 13F filing showed Friday. The value of this share was approximately $4.33 billion at the end of the quarter.

Buffett has long been cautious about technology stocks, although with the “Oracle of Omaha” preparing to step down as CEO at the end of the year, it is possible that someone else at Berkshire may have made the call to invest in Alphabet.

Berkshire also moved to trim its stakes in Apple (AAPL) and Bank of America (BAC) in the third quarter, although they remain two of Berkshire’s largest holdings.

Shares of Zymeworks and Jazz Pharmaceuticals rose after positive drug trial results

Shares of Zymeworks (ZYME) and Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) rose 33% and 17%, respectively, after the biopharmaceutical companies reported positive results from a phase 3 trial of the cancer drug.

The late-stage trial, conducted jointly with BeOne Medicines (ONC), evaluating Ziihera in combination with chemotherapy to treat cancers of the stomach, gastroesophageal junction, and esophagus “demonstrated highly statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in progression-free survival (PFS) compared to the control arm,” Gas said.

Ziihera is being developed by Jazz and BeOne under licensing agreements from Zymeworks, which first developed the molecule.

BeOne’s US-listed shares rose about 5% in recent trading. Shares of the three companies have risen sharply this year.

Women and men retire before retirement age – this is when they actually leave the workforce

1 hour and 21 minutes ago

For decades, 65 has been considered the traditional retirement age in the United States, because it marks the time when most people become eligible for Medicare.

But today, this is starting to change, as many people are retiring before the age of 65, and this may be due to factors such as health, dealing with a layoff, or even the retirement of a spouse.

Data from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College shows that the average retirement age is 64.6 for men and 62.6 for women.

Is 65 still the standard retirement age? Layoffs and health issues cause many to leave the workforce early.

“Look at men; probably only about 40% of people, about half of people, get to age 65,” Jeffrey Sanzenbacher, a professor of practice at Boston College, said in an August 2025 interview with Investopedia. “So about half of people retire before that, and half of people after that.” “For women, these numbers are a little lower. [For] In 2024, we’re talking about 45% of women reaching the age of 65, [and] Perhaps about 35% reach age 67.

Early retirement is not always an option. Many people leave the workforce sooner than expected due to health problems or job loss. A spouse’s retirement can also affect an individual’s retirement timeline.

“I think people underestimate how important it is for their spouses to retire,” Sanzenbacher said. “A lot of people, once their spouses retire, they will retire, too.”

Novo Nordisk reduces self-checkout prices on Wegovy and Ozempic

2 hours and 43 minutes ago

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is cutting direct-to-consumer prices on popular weight-loss drugs.

Novo Nordisk (NVO) announced Monday that starting today it will reduce the price of Wegovy and Ozempic for current self-pay patients in the U.S. to $349 per month from $499 per month.

Additionally, the company said, “Wegovy (semaglutide) 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and Ozempic injections are now available at a limited price of $199 per month for new self-pay patients between now and March 31, 2026. This introductory offer is good for the first two months of treatment and applies to the lowest of the two doses (0.25 mg and 0.5 mg) of Wegovy or Ozempic.”

The news comes less than two weeks after the White House announced deals with Novo Nordisk and rival Eli Lilly (LLY) through which Medicare recipients will be able to purchase Wegovy, Ozempic, Lilly’s Zepbound, and Moonjaro for less than $50 a month.

US-listed shares of Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly fell 1% less than an hour before the bell. Novo Nordisk shares entered Monday down about 45% this year, while Lilly shares rose by about a third.

There are fewer holiday jobs this year. Employers have more ‘power’

3 hours and 36 minutes ago

Are you looking for a short-term job to help with vacation expenses? Be prepared for some intense competition.

Getting a holiday job will likely be more difficult and come with fewer perks this season, as companies are likely to be more reticent about offering help as consumer sentiment declines and executives brace for a potential consumer slowdown, retail and labor experts said.

Retailers may not need much help this holiday season.

The National Retail Federation said seasonal hiring could reach a low not seen in 15 years, and it expects 265,000 to 365,000 of those jobs. Meanwhile, more Americans are looking for seasonal jobs — holiday job searches rose 27% year over year at the end of September, according to the Digital Jobs Council — and companies know they have the upper hand.

“The power is actually in the hands of employers,” said Alison Shrivastava, an economist at Indeed. “They don’t have to offer things like signing bonuses. They don’t actually have to compete for higher wages to attract workers.”
