A Swansea Council spokesman said: “The proposed deal between the WRU and Y11 to purchase Cardiff Rugby would mean the end of the Ospreys as a professional men’s regional rugby team playing in the URC.”

“We are seeking an injunction to prevent this deal from going ahead so further discussions can take place while the current regional structure of the four teams remains in place.

“The injunction will give all parties the opportunity to consider other options for the future of regional rugby in Wales.

“We believe this is a reasonable and proportionate measure given the risks to the future of the Ospreys and the impact it may have on Swansea and the region as a whole.

“Players, supporters, residents, community clubs and local businesses stand together to support the Ospreys remaining as one of the four professional regional rugby teams in Wales.”

In a separate action earlier this week, the council formally asked the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate the proposed deal between the WRU and Y11.

The council’s concerns focus on the proposed reduction in the number of professional teams from four to three, the licensing allocation process, and the possibility of a single ownership group taking control of two Welsh clubs.
