Swansea are keen to appoint a new management team before returning to action after the international break, with their next match being against Bristol City on Saturday 22 November.

Hellberg has been in charge of Hammarby for the past two seasons and led the Stockholm club to a second successive finish in the Swedish top league.

He has one year left on his current contract with Hammarby, meaning Swansea will have to pay a compensation fee to secure his services. However, the size of the fee is unlikely to pose an issue for the Welsh club.

Helberg was in contention for a move to Wales following the departure of Luke Williams in February, but Sheehan was handed a three-year contract on the back of a sharp improvement in form at the end of last season.

Hellberg, who spent his playing career in Sweden’s lower league, began his coaching career more than a decade ago.

He made his mark as a coach in the lower divisions with Kuddby IF and then IF Sylvia before joining the staff at top-flight club IFK Norkopping in 2020.

Hellberg’s first head coaching role in Allsvenskan came at IFK Varnamo, where two impressive seasons led to a move to Hammarby.
