On the day Tomasson was sacked, Potter was at his home in Sweden and told media Fotbolskanalen: “I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football.”

Four days later, he got the job.

Potter’s previous roles include an eight-month spell at West Ham, seven months at Chelsea, success with Brighton and Swansea, and seven years in charge of Swedish side Ostersunds since 2011.

The 50-year-old Englishman led Swedish football’s fourth tier Östersunds to the top flight and helped them lift the Swedish Cup in 2017.

“Potter is half Swedish,” Kamarck said. “Well, he’s not, but he actually spoke in Swedish at the press conference, so he’s very likable and he’s almost one of us. He’ll get more time than most foreign managers.

“At the moment, we couldn’t have had anyone better. He has to be a better coach now despite some difficulties in his last two spells. He’s a very humble guy with good ideas.”

“When the team plays, you have to get everyone involved, and he is a really good coach to do that, especially for a country like Sweden.

“Maybe it’s not that easy in Chelsea – there are a lot of captains on that ship. In Sweden we want one captain and we want to follow that captain.”

According to Kamarck, the potter is “always adapting and innovating.”

He said: “For Sweden to play international tournaments and try to dominate the midfield, our performance will be poor.”

“You have to have a collective way of playing, which Potter understands.

“He’s proven that with his teams. Beating Arsenal away to Ostersunds in 2018 – even if it was just one game, it shows he has the ability.”
