Although Celtic have also come second to some of their main rivals this season, some observers feel they have made a better start than expected.

Last season they failed to live up to expectations as they looked to retain the title after their historic first win the previous season.

The demands of Champions League football and reports of unrest within the camp were not conducive to a successful season.

The loss of starting centre-back Kaitlyn Hayes at the start of this year, followed by some significant departures at the end of the season, led to a feeling that all was not well.

An away win over Hearts, a team that had caused them some problems the previous season, provided a solid start.

Coach Elena Sedikou said it was important to “build on this win”, but when it came to facing teams she expected to be rivals this season, they dropped points.

A draw with Hibs was followed by defeats to Rangers and City – all at home.

The loss to City was painful and prompted the Swede to speak out, where she appeared to criticize Celtic’s level of investment in the women’s side.

“I feel now that we are in a situation where teams are investing heavily and you can see how difficult it is every season,” Sadiku said. “Teams are constantly improving and we have to push in the same direction as well.”

The Celtic boss has criticized a failure to strengthen his squad – a mirror image of the now-departed Brendan Rodgers’ complaints about the men’s team.

Given some of their recent results and the current league standings, Sadiku might have earned a point given Celtic sit behind both City and Hibs while level on points with Hearts.

However, being six points behind the leaders is not difficult, and a win over their rivals in Glasgow on Friday could get them back on track.

“There is more pressure on Rangers because they are behind us,” Siddiqo said. “It has been a long time since we beat them, but belief will be more important than tactics and we have strong belief at the moment.”

Rangers’ record at Ibrox may also give Sadiko and her players some confidence for a trip they will repeat in February when they visit holders Celtic in the SWPL Cup semi-final.

Sadiku also added: “The SWPL is tougher than ever, but that’s the most exciting thing about this league – playing against Rangers. It’s more than just a game.”
