McCollum added: “I enjoy the role in all its forms and would love to continue with it.”

“It has been an absolute honor to be in this position over the past three and a half years. I feel we have made some significant improvements across the formats.

“Yes, we missed some chances, but I think this team has a real chance over the coming years to keep improving and hopefully finish what we started. I would love to be a part of that.”

Key has backed McCollum through the Ashes, but neither ECB chief executive Richard Gould nor president Richard Thomson have spoken publicly about his future.

At the end of the Ashes, McCullum also received support from Test captain Ben Stokes, while the relationship between McCullum and Brook blossomed during the T20 World Cup.

Asked after the semi-final defeat whether McCullum should stay on, Brook said: “125%. I’ve said many times he’s the best coach I’ve ever seen.”

“The way he talks to everyone, he has an aura in the dressing room, everyone looks up to him. The things he has done over the four years since he took over has hopefully changed English cricket for the better.”

“Our partnership has been good throughout the competition and since I took over. I hope it continues for a long time.”

Failures in away Ashes tours often signal a change in management of England teams.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former England captain Nasser Hussain said the ECB must be careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past, while not ignoring the failures of this latest defeat in Australia.

“What you should get away from is going to the Ashes, losing, getting rid of the coach and the captain, and starting over. I’m not a fan of that at all,” Hussain said.

“But I’m also not keen, two months on, to forget what happened in the Ashes, how bad England were on and off the field – all the mistakes that were made.

“There is a feeling that Brooke and McCollum are on the same page, but there is a suggestion of a difference during the Ashes and that is a concern.

“They made good decisions in the white-ball game that they didn’t do in the Ashes. They missed a chance there and you can’t ignore that.”
