T20 World Cup: England beat Scotland to get campaign back on track

Although Scotland’s score always looked 20 points under par, England were unsettled at one point.

They took three wickets in the powerplay, including Archer having the dangerous George Muncy and number three Brandon McMullen miss in a spirited opening spell from three overs, but Purrington made an impressive save.

Purrington, a good slow bowler, was particularly aggressive against the English spinners. He hit Rashid for four and a six in the second over and was the aggressor in a 71-run partnership with Tom Bruce.

At 113-3 in the 13th over, Scotland’s target was 190. Instead, Bruce’s wicket saw the innings slip away.

He swept Liam Dawson to deep square leg for 24 – one of six batsmen to miss picking fielders in the deep.

In the next over, Rashid pinned the sweeping Perrington in front as the Englishman, after being wicketless for 26 runs in his first two overs, took 3-10 in his second over.

Dawson, who took 2-34, added the wicket of Michael Lisk, who also fell in the deep.

Scotland’s 5-14 collapse in 3.3 overs ultimately deprived them of 30 runs that could have kept them alive in this tournament.
