T20 World Cup: ‘Golden Ticket’ rush for Scotland and Denmark at Euro 92

After Watt and his colleagues knew they were going to India, they were unsure when they would leave.

Flights were booked in the hope of obtaining visas, and when they did, the rush to go halfway around the world began.

“It was like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” Watt said. “I got my golden ticket and said to myself, ‘You’ve got to take me on the plane tonight.’

“Leski in Aberdeen had to drive two-and-a-half hours to Edinburgh, and he got his visa at the same time as I did.

“We are all very excited and very grateful for this opportunity, but we also feel sorry for Bangladesh on the other side of it.”

Scotland is one of five European teams in the competition and one of nine associate members of the ICC.

After friendly defeats to Afghanistan and Namibia, they face the West Indies in their opening match on Saturday, before matches against Italy, England and Nepal in Group C, with the top two places qualifying for the Super 8.

Watt says the prospect of seeing different matches can only be a positive thing.

“Obviously I have a little favoritism for their partners,” he said.

“But I think the more the merrier. You see these Test nations playing against each other a lot of times, it’s a bit of the same and I think it’s really refreshing when teammates come in and play against these top teams.”

“Obviously sometimes results don’t go your way, but that’s the only way these teams and ourselves will learn how to play against them.

“So, it’s a great learning curve, but also, we’re not just there to learn, we’re there to beat teams.”
