Team Europe wins BBC Team Sports Personality of the Year 2025 after winning the Ryder Cup

Team Europe have been named BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year for 2025 following their dramatic Ryder Cup victory.

Captain Luke Donald led the European team to their first win on American soil since 2012 with a 15-13 win in New York.

In front of a volatile crowd at the Bethpage Black Stadium, Europe recorded its fifth victory over the United States since the tournament began in 1927.

The Europeans set the stage for one of the most dramatic days in Ryder Cup history by taking an 11½-4½ lead going into the final day on Sunday.

It was the first time either team had a seven-point lead heading into the final day, and Europe needed just three points to achieve victory.

No team has ever come back from a deficit of more than four points to win, but the United States put in an impressive performance to get themselves back into contention.

However, Europe managed to hold on to secure their first away win since the ‘Miracle of Medina’ in 2012.

“As many of the other athletes in this room know, it is a huge honor to be part of these teams,” said Rory McIlroy as he accepted the Team Europe award alongside Tommy Fleetwood.

McIlroy, who won the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, added: “We’re here as two of the 12 players. We also had the captain, the vice-captain and all the backroom staff – we couldn’t have done what we did without them all.”
