Tech worker-backed PAC brings $5M knife to Big Tech’s $100M battle

A grassroots movement is forming among tech workers every day who are demanding that their companies develop and deploy AI responsibly. The Guardrails Coalition, a new super PAC dedicated to supporting AI legislation, aims to capitalize on this discontent.

Democratic activists Shauna Thomas and Leah Hunt Hendricks launched the Guardrails coalition on Thursday with support from tech employees, labor unions and other groups, according to The New York Times.

“Our core belief here is that people still have the power to stop this authoritarian takeover of the Trump administration and the tech sector,” Thomas told the New York Times.

Guardrails bills itself as a populist political movement that relies on small donations from people living in the trenches of the AI ​​boom. The PAC has about $5 million at its disposal today and plans to raise $15 million this cycle — a small amount compared to deep-pocketed opponents like Leadership Future, which has more than $100 million from technology leaders like OpenAI President Greg Brockman.

Guardrails will buy ads to support Alex Bores, the New York congressional candidate who has become Leading the Future’s top target and is running in next week’s primary. On Thursday, Boris shared an ad featuring the parents of Adam Ren, the teenager who died by suicide after months of lengthy conversations with ChatGPT.

Boris is also receiving support from another major pro-legislation political action committee, Public First Action, which is backed by Anthropic.

While OpenAI has tried to distance itself from Brockman’s donations, many employees are reportedly unconvinced, and several have expressed concerns on social media about Future Leadership’s attacks on Boris.

This year, tech workers have also rallied to demand that their bosses terminate contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and to urge the Pentagon to withdraw its designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk — a designation that critics say was imposed without due process in response to Anthropic’s restrictions on its technology used for mass surveillance and autonomous warfare.

“It’s not about conformity [Leading the Future] “Dollar for dollar. What this vehicle is intended to do is be a political home for people who are concerned about the way the anti-regulatory AI technology sector is trying to manipulate elections,” Thomas said.
