Leave your headlights on It’s used to mean a knock on a neighbor’s door — or a long and potentially expensive wait for a tow truck. But battery technology is changing everything, whether for cars, portable blenders or power units. Portable jump starters now don’t cost much more than a drop and can jump start your car even with a completely flat battery. Most of them can also charge your phone or laptop in a pinch.

My transformative moment occurred in a remote area of ​​northern Delaware, where I left my headlights on after a foggy morning commute. I chased the phone signal for over an hour, until one of the parks employees happened to have one of the new breeds of lithium-ion jump starters behind his seat. I drove straight to the auto parts store and purchased a basic 1000 amp NOCO starter ($100) which saved my stash many times after that.

NOCO is still a brand I recommend. The same goes for the reliable, low-cost Gooloo A3 ($70) I bought after moving cross-country. But after testing eight of the most popular lithium-ion jump starters on the market over dozens of starts, it’s the Wolfbox 4000 Amp Jump Starter ($170) that came out on top for its combination of reliability, price, capacity, and sheer cranking power. The Wolfbox charges quickly, the engine starts smoothly, and stays above half capacity after 15 jump starts from dead on a V6.

Best overall portable jump starter: Wolfbox 4000A Jump Starter

This jump starter from Dallas-based Wolfbox doesn’t have a lot of bells or whistles. It will charge a laptop or phone at 65W from the USB-C port if you need it. It has an LED light if it’s dark. But it basically does two things: maintains charge, and releases charge. It does this safely, without the risk of sparking or reversing polarity if wires are crossed. And if you hit the boost button, bypassing the low-voltage safety cutoff, this Wolfbox can take a starting battery as close to dead as a healthy battery can get.

Tested on an old 1994 six-cylinder Land Cruiser with a six-month-old (dead) battery and on a 97 Mitsubishi Montero, the Wolfbox was able to start my engine faster and better than it normally starts after sitting for a few days. The 89 watt-hour capacity is among the largest I’ve tested. On a single charge, I was able to start the Land Cruiser 15 times before the battery capacity dropped to 50 percent. (Beyond that, a quick start is still perfectly possible, but the manufacturer has noted that it is starting to lose its effectiveness.)

That’s a lot of runway at the start which also gives reason to be confident. The LED is conveniently placed, the clips are larger and provide more distance than most jump starters, and the device remains relatively compact. Although it’s listed above $150, I usually see it much closer to $100, making it a welcome combination of economy and power.
