‘The age of toys is over’: Toy Story 5’s first teaser introduces a new technological enemy | toy story

The first trailer for Toy Story 5 provided a brief glimpse at the highly anticipated animated sequel, which will be released next summer.

The teaser introduces a new arrival and “a whole new threat to playtime” with the tagline “The age of gaming is over.” The newest character is a smart tablet called Lilypad, which is voiced by Past Lives and Tron: Ares star Greta Lee, bringing new technology to old games.

Co-directors Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris have promised a “hilariously antagonistic tone.” Stanton’s credits as a director include Finding Nemo and Wall-E, while the film will mark Harris’ directorial debut after working on Pixar projects in the past in other roles.

“It’s been a fun and moving journey exploring how our favorite team from retro gaming can respond to today’s world of technology, and we’re thrilled to share this first glimpse with fans,” they said in a statement.

Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are among the returning voice actors while Conan O’Brien will also join as a potty training tech assistant called Smarty Pants. Following the death of Carl Weathers last year, Ernie Hudson will also take over the role of Combat Carl.

The fifth film has been confirmed for early 2023, and is a continuation of the series that has so far grossed $3.3 billion worldwide. Toy Story 5 will be the first in the series not to include John Lasseter, who left Pixar in 2018 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

The release next summer comes after a disappointing year for Pixar with its latest release, the sci-fi adventure Elio, suffering the worst box office opening in the company’s history. This film has also been plagued by reports of reshoots and the alleged removal of any extraneous themes.

Toy Story 5 also follows spin-off attempt Lightyear, which was a disappointment at the box office in the summer of 2022, losing $106 million to Disney.

Toy Story 5 will be released next summer in a season that will also see the premieres of other series such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, Scary Movie 6, Minions 3, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
