Abbott was unlikely to feature in Perth, with Hazlewood set to join Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland as specialist seamers.
Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury, is believed to be on track to return for the second Test in Brisbane from December 4. Batter Steve Smith will lead Australia in Cummins’ absence.
Like many Australia players, Hazlewood is taking part in the current round of Sheffield Shield matches in preparation for the Ashes clash.
Before this week, he had not played a first-class match for NSW in more than a year.
He felt tightness in his hamstring towards the end of Victoria’s second round on Wednesday and left the field as a precaution. Neither Hazlewood nor Abbott batted in New South Wales’ second innings as they lost by 300 runs.
โWe are a week away from the Test series โ always be careful,โ Cummins said.
โThey wanted to know what was going on before pushing it and possibly making anything worse.
โIt’s rare to make him cheerful, so it was good to see him smiling.
“He knows his body well. I think he was a little worried (and) wanted to check it out. I only saw him briefly, but he was a little happier after that.”
Abbott played 57 international matches for Australia in white-ball cricket.
Brendan Doggett is the other player in the team, providing cover for Starc, Boland and Hazlewood.
