The Department of Justice’s Jeffrey Epstein files are here

Well, they’ve finally arrived here. On Friday, the US Department of Justice released a large batch of files related to notorious convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The release comes just eight hours before the deadline set by the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which President Donald Trump signed into law last month.

To the Trump administration, Epstein was “the man who never dies,” in Trump’s own words. Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, the Justice Department and FBI have been examining the agencies’ investigative holdings and releasing portions of them in batches. While Friday’s release represents the largest collection of documents related to Epstein to date, the Justice Department has not released all the documents in its possession, potentially setting up a legal battle that could lead to department officials being impeached or even prosecuted under the law.

In July, a joint memorandum from the Department of Justice and the FBI said that after a “thorough review” of the records, “more than 300 gigabytes of data and physical evidence” had been uncovered. Not all of that is part of today’s release. The Department of Justice is permitted to withhold or redact certain categories of information from public disclosure, including information that would identify victims (the memo noted that a significant portion of the evidence included photos and videos of victims) and illegal material related to child sexual abuse (which the memo noted was also included in the holdings). The Justice Department will have to submit a report to Congress within 15 days listing the categories of records that were disclosed and withheld, as well as a summary of the redactions made and their legal basis.

The release includes material collected as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for crimes related to Epstein. As part of their compliance with the Epstein Transparency Act, DOJ attorneys have filed several requests to unseal grand jury materials in matters involving Epstein and Maxwell. These proposals were approved earlier this month.

In addition to those provisions, the law requires the Department of Justice to disclose other types of information in its possession, including that relating to individuals and organizations with known or alleged ties to Epstein and his criminal networks, internal communications about decisions to investigate or charge Epstein, and records relating to his death while in his prison cell.
