💡 Here’s what you’ll learn:

The WRU announced plans to reduce the number of teams to three on 24 October after a consultation period on previous proposals to reduce the number of teams to two.

The Board subsequently held talks with all professional clubs, with the Dragons stating that they expected a “constructive and meaningful” engagement.

“Under the WRU’s current proposals, professional clubs will have no control over rugby decisions including coaching, player recruitment and selection,” a club statement said.

“For the Dragons RFC, this is not viable or desirable, but we have continually sought to have a constructive discussion on how the association’s plans can be improved.”

“Shortly after the meeting began, it became clear that the WRU was not inclined to make adjustments to the proposed management arrangements. We therefore left the meeting shortly after.

“In short, nothing had changed, the WFA was still insisting on controlling all matters relating to rugby and demanding that they directly employ all players, coaches and all support staff.

“Centralized management by the WRU of all rugby operations is unacceptable, nor is it in the best interest of club owners, who expect to be fully accountable and responsible for rugby operations, which is a key and core component of the club and business we have purchased.”

The Dragons also say they are unhappy with “the new set of financial commitments required of owners… which are unacceptable and outside the market” which they were not aware of prior to receiving documents from the WRU on 6 November.
