Liverpool FC announced today, Friday, that it has suspended Rafaela Borggraf, the team’s goalkeeper, for six matches, due to using discriminatory language towards her teammate.
Reds coach Gareth Taylor explained that Borggraaf accepted the punishment, following an investigation by the Football Association that began in September, and he has already played five of the six matches.
The incident, which is believed to have involved Burggraf making an alleged racist remark, occurred during Liverpool’s pre-season training camp.
The 25-year-old German joined Liverpool from Freiburg in the summer and has made three first-team appearances.
She will serve the final game of her suspension when she misses Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup fourth round match against the London Bees (13:00 GMT).
Borggrafe has also been enrolled in an education program by the Football Association.
Liverpool followed FA protocols by reporting the incident and awaiting details of the investigation. Borggraaf’s punishment was not initially set, but the club has now been told how long her ban will be.
“The situation is the situation. The team and the club acted in the appropriate way,” Taylor said in a pre-match press conference.
“The FA has supported us. It has been a bit late, which has been frustrating for everyone involved, especially Rafaela.”
“We’re happy now that it’s completed and glad we’ve got some details on what it looks like. We can all move forward.”
