Do you plan to change rock music forever? Did you envision a career that would last decades, or was it all a bit random? Naphtsolim
When Sonic Youth first started, there was a high level of music that did something people had never done before, and it was hard to know how to add to that. There was the Velvet Underground, who cast a huge shadow, and then all the non-wave bands, and when you’re faced with all this quiet, and you feel like you don’t belong, how can you make something happen? You have to focus on the thrill of making something that’s unlike anything that has existed before. It may seem like an exaggeration to say: “We wanted to do something new,” but that’s all it is, and then you have to see what happens. This is still my approach. Honestly, I had no intention of making solo records – I was playing in an improvisation-based project with Bill Nas, Body/Head, but that was it. And it was this producer in Los Angeles, Justin Raisen, who kept pestering me to do a solo record. There was no plan. In the end, again, I said, let’s see what happens.

I’ve thought about it. I consider myself a visual artist who writes, not an artist author. I’m not going to say I’ll never try to write a novel, but writing is always a challenge, just the first part, and I’m a huge procrastinator. I saw an exhibition of Sol LeWitt murals at the small Okey Dokey Gallery in Los Angeles. A lot of LeWitt’s wall pieces are didactic: like, you start in the middle of the wall and you draw an uneven line, and this first line is black, and then you go down and up, alternating between colors, following this squiggly line. I think it took the people behind it four days to install it; They do these pieces all over the world. This color was basically basic, and it was so gorgeous!

I used to work at a photo shop in Little Italy run by this guy Todd, who was very welcoming to artists – he would let them tinker with their work or whatever they wanted to do on the machines. everyone He’ll go to Todd. Jim Jarmusch was there, transcribing his scripts, and his friend Sarah Driver was there working with me. Basquiat was coming often – we actually sold the record of his band with Vincent Gallo, Grey. There were a lot of interesting and talented people in New York at that time; He was just another person I was afraid of [laughs].

I’d be curious what that looks like. People are so fascinated by technology – it’s cool and exciting. Part of the appeal of AI is that it is not human at all: it is clean, it has no sense of death about it, and no sense of human frailty. It’s definitely something I’m afraid of.

Was punk for you more about sound, aesthetics, or being allowed to think differently? Pistol76
It was the anti-corporate sentiment that was important to me, actually, not three-chord rock. I was drawn to non-wave music, which was more nihilistic: bands like DNA, Mars, Theoretical Girls, and Lydia Lunch. They felt more free. But there were definitely bands from the punk era that I admired, like the Raincoats and The Slits. There were a lot of women playing music in punk, and in England especially, gender norms didn’t seem to matter much.

What was the reaction to your famous shirt?Girls invented punk rock, not England“? Bready Boy
This was a t-shirt someone made from something I said in an interview. They threw it on stage and I started wearing it. This is funny. It was just born out of this debate about who invented punk rock, England or America. I felt that women had the most to rebel against, and were the most outsiders.

What or who was, is, and will be the coolest thing? com. djshuggg
[New York mayor Zohran] Mamdani? Fingers crossed. I wrote Kool Thing about meeting LL Cool J after I interviewed him for Spin in the 1980s. Radio is one of my favorite records. I liked how minimalist it was. What did he look like? He was just a man. I was curious when he recorded those early records with Rick Rubin, to see how much influence Rick had on the rock music he sampled. So I asked LL what rock music he liked, and he said, “Bon Jovi.” [laughs]. I also stood in front of [New York music club] CBGBs and they did a poll, just casually asking all these little white kids what they thought of LL Cool J’s new record. And a lot of them didn’t even know who he was. I think this proves how much of a bubble the punk scene was.

Have you ever determined the exact dimensions of hell? walmai
No, but I think we’re learning about it now.

Are you shy? Maharisa
Yes, I am a shy person. A lot of performers are really shy. There’s something about interacting with the technology of being on stage, and hearing your voice through the microphone, that kind of sublimates and makes you feel like you’re not yourself, in a certain way. Is it a way to overcome my shyness? I think so. When I’m on stage, no one can bother me, I can just enjoy myself. I feel invincible on stage sometimes. Sometimes, I feel incredibly vulnerable. I have a huge desire to please people and play with their expectations, and that’s what makes performing in a rock ‘n’ roll context interesting to me.

Do you think that male egos are more fragile now in the music industry, or have things changed for the better? Captain Lip
I think the male ego is more fragile than it has ever been. I read these articles like “I’m embarrassed to have a boyfriend,” and I think men are in trouble. It’s great that there are more women in music now. The goal of having more women, in any field, is to eliminate clichés about women’s identity.

What do you do to stay positive in such a turbulent world? Revelstoke
Making art is always good therapy – it makes you feel like you have some control over something, and that can be positive. I also watch a lot of bad movies and TV shows, like The Pitt, and I watched the new show Vladimir.

What is there in your racer behind the scenes these days that wasn’t 30 years ago? ColQ666
Chicken from Whole Foods – One of the band members was on a specific diet, so we had to make sure there was always some protein, but we all ended up enjoying it. In the early days, playing somewhere like CBGB, there were no contestants; I don’t think there was even a dressing room. At that time, bands loved to go to Europe, because the riders were much better. The people who run the European venues make you feel like you are Humans [laughs].

Maybe too many to mention [laughs]. Regret, isn’t this just a kind of nostalgia? When I look back, I wish I had more self-confidence when I first moved to New York. I could have pursued art more vigorously, and not started out playing in a band.
