Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful and feared criminal organizations, have torched businesses and set up burning barricades since El Mencho’s death.

The Mexican Open issued a statement saying that “the supposed cancellation of the event due to security issues in Jalisco is not true.”

The statement read: “The event continues as scheduled and tournament operations are proceeding normally.

“We maintain constant coordination and communication with federal, state and municipal authorities, in accordance with established security protocols.”

Britons Katie Poulter and Heather Watson are set to compete in the Merida Open in Mexico this week.

The events take place in the state of Yucatán, which does not appear to have been greatly affected by violence.

Boulter will play against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maya on Monday, while Watson will face Spaniard Jessica Pozas Manero on Tuesday.

Reuters reported that a men’s soccer match between Queretaro and FC Juarez and a women’s soccer match between Chivas and America were postponed indefinitely.

It also said that a match between Necaxa and Queretaro in Aguascalientes was postponed when players fled the field after hearing loud noises outside Victoria Stadium. The match resumed later.
