X recently began rolling out a new feature that apparently revealed that many right-wing “America First” accounts are actually based outside of the United States. Except the data may not be reliable.

Posting a gallery of MAGA accounts appearing to be based in Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan and Thailand, left-wing influencer Mika Irfan wrote: “This is complete Armageddon for the online right.”
Many of the surprising accounts, such as @American who appears to be based in Pakistan, are relatively small, though others have hundreds of thousands of followers.
The feature is being rolled out globally, X product manager Nikita Beer said on Saturday, calling it an “important first step to ensuring the safety of the global city square.” However, some users have complained that their listed location is wildly inaccurate. Pierre admitted that “the data was not 100% for the old accounts” and suggested that “some of the difficult issues…will be resolved by Tuesday.”
The Verge notes that while there are outrage-baiting accounts and troll farms based outside the US, many of the listed sites appear highly questionable, with confusion likely due to travel, global teams, VPNs, or outdated IP addresses.
