The office says Rep. Jim Byrd is expected to make a full recovery from a car accident

Indiana U.S. Rep. Jim Byrd is expected to make a full recovery after his car was struck in a car accident that sent him to the hospital, the Republican’s office said Tuesday.

“He is deeply grateful for everyone’s prayers during this time,” Byrd’s congressional office said in a statement.

The statement did not include further details about the incident. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the congressman’s wife was also hospitalized.

“They’re going to be fine, but they had a really bad accident, and we’re praying they get out of this hospital very quickly,” Trump said while speaking to House Republicans at a Kennedy Center resort. “He’ll be fine. You’ll be fine.”

Byrd, who represents West Central Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, was first elected to Congress in 2019. He is 80 years old.

News of the accident came as Republicans in the capital mourned the death of Republican Doug LaMalfa, a seven-term US representative from California. His death, coupled with the resignation of Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, narrowed the party’s control of the House of Representatives to 218 seats to the Democrats’ 213.

In 2022, Republican Indiana state Rep. Jackie Walorski was killed in a single-vehicle crash in her district in northern Indiana. Two of her employees who were traveling with her and the woman who was driving the other car also died.
