Saracens made a late change to their line-up with Ollie Hartley, who was not named in the squad, replacing Lucio Senti.

And it was the home side who started the game the better, with Calori instinctively collecting a loose pass from Slade and running across the ball without any interception, before Theo Dunne crossed the ball for Malins to score into the corner at the end of an effective goal-line routine.

The Chiefs’ start got worse when Tom Hooper was sent to the sin box for a tackle as he made contact with Dunn’s knee. The fact that the initial contact was to the groin is what prevented referee Luke Pearce from issuing a red card for 20 minutes.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the leaders continued to fight and beat in front after a long TMO review.

Campbell Riddell won 50:50 with Calori after Ivan van Zyl let an Exeter box kick go over his head.

The ball bounced and hit Riddell in the face before he took control and set up Varney for an easy finish, replays inconclusive as to whether the ball touched his hand for a powerful hit in the process.

Ridl’s Prem debut was marked by a trip to the sin-bin for a deliberate hit that clipped Hartley’s pass and denied Calori a second, with the penalty awarded to Sarrez to regain the lead.

But Calori eventually got the second try his performance deserved after Malins played well at the other end, as the ball passed to Elliot Daly, who found his winger with a lofted pass before Calori dived into the corner with his last move of the game.

The best was left for last as two quick efforts from Fisilau led to a grandstand finish.

Firstly, he beat the back of the putt, before working his way through to give the Chiefs a one-point lead.

Exeter survived a powerful strike from the home side as the defense managed to hold the ball on the goal line, before Farrell missed a penalty attempt that would have restored the Men in Black’s lead.

And with the final action of the game, Slade delivered the ball to run into the corner and finish off the points for the visitors.
