✅ Key idea:
ChatGPT’s growth has begun to decline, according to new data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Today, OpenAI’s proprietary chatbot remains the industry leader, accounting for 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of global monthly active users. However, Google Gemini is starting to outperform ChatGPT in terms of download growth, monthly active user growth, and time spent in the app growth, the company found.
Over time, the increasing pace of adoption could help Gemini narrow the gap with ChatGPT. This is something that OpenAI is now concerned about, as its recent “code red” note noted. The letter, penned by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, directed employees to focus on improving the company’s AI products, particularly in areas like personalization, reliability, image generation, and more.
Looking at the latest data, it’s clear that the race is far from over: both ChatGPT and Gemini are still seeing significant growth.
ChatGPT saw global MAUs rise 180% year over year as of November 2025, while Gemini MAUs rose 170%.

But new data suggests that the number of global monthly active users of ChatGPT rose just 6% from August to November, to nearly 810 million. (The company notes that the monthly active user numbers in the chart above have been rounded.) This number may indicate that the AI chatbot is approaching market saturation, says Sensor Tower.
Meanwhile, the number of global monthly active users for Google Gemini jumped by about 30% during the same time frame, as the release of a new image generation model, Nano Banana, drove increased adoption.
Additionally, the report noted that nearly twice as many Android users in the U.S. now interact with Gemini directly through the Android operating system compared to using the standalone Gemini mobile app. This could provide Google with a competitive advantage in the global market, where Android dominates, because it means that Gemini is not limited to just using it within a mobile app or web interface.

Gemini is also increasing its share in the overall AI chatbot market when compared to all the top apps like ChatGPT, Copilot, Cloude, Perplexity, and Grok. Over the past seven months (May-November 2025), Gemini has increased its share of monthly active users globally by three percentage points, according to company estimates.
But ChatGPT saw its share of global monthly active users fall by three percentage points over the past four months (August-November 2025), by comparison.
The challenges posed by Perplexity and Cloude may also impact ChatGPT, as both competitors have seen triple-digit growth for their chatbots in 2025, with the former up 370% year over year, and the latter up 190%.

ChatGPT also saw global downloads grow 85% year-on-year as of November, but this lagged behind the group’s overall average growth of 110%.
Perplexity and Gemini saw the largest growth, rising 215% and 190% year over year, respectively.
Finally, Sensor Tower said the time Gemini users spend on the app has doubled over the past few months. As of November, Gemini users were spending 11 minutes per day on the app, a 120% increase from March. This is likely due to the popularity of the Nano Banana image generating model in September.
Daily time spent by ChatGPT users increased by only 6% over the same time frame. Additionally, time spent by ChatGPT users decreased by 10% in November, compared to July.
While current data suggests that Google may be catching up to the market leader, much of its recent gains have to do with the success of the Nano Banana. OpenAI could accelerate growth again through the launch of its new products, if they have a similar impact.
