Everything is ready at Meta, where the company is developing new models of artificial intelligence within the framework of its superintelligence laboratory led by Alexander Wang, co-founder of Scale AI. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company is now working on a photo and video model codenamed “Mango” along with a new text-based model known internally as “Avocado.”

The tech giant plans to launch the new models in the first half of 2026, the newspaper said, citing an internal Q&A at Meta on Thursday, where Wang and chief product officer Chris Cox revealed the new roadmap.

Meta aims to make the text-based model better at programming while exploring new universal models that understand visual information and can think, plan and act without having to train on all the possibilities, Wang said.

Meta has recently fallen behind its competitors, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, in the AI race. The company’s AI division has seen major restructuring this year, which has included leadership changes and poaching researchers from other major companies. However, many of the researchers who joined Meta SuperIntelligence Labs (MSL) have already left the company.

Last month, the company’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, also announced that he was leaving to found his own startup.

Meta does not have a successful AI product yet. Instead, Meta AI Assistant’s numbers are backed by the company’s existing social networks that cover billions of users, where the company places Assistant in the search bar for its apps.

This means that the first projects and models that come out of MSL will have a huge impact on it.
