FAR held on to beat newcomer ASEC Mimosas 2-1 in the Women’s CAF Champions League final and become champions of the continent for the second time.
Hanan Ait El Haj put the Moroccan team ahead with a penalty kick in the 13th minute after Safaa Bannouk was blocked by Abou Yabou.
ASEC Mimosas took the lead in the second half, and Ami Priskal Diallo scored with a wonderful header after a cross from Subi Bro, to equalize for the Ivory Coast team 10 minutes after the start of the second half.
But FAR were awarded a second penalty kick in the final minutes when Noura Diarra committed a reckless challenge on Sofia Povetini.
This time it was Zainab Redouani who slotted the ball into the net in the 85th minute and restored the lead for her team.
Asastasi Gbehi came close to forcing extra time but shot wide of the post in stoppage time, and the centre-back was sent off after the final whistle for dissent.
FAR tied with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns as two-time winners of the title, having lifted the trophy for the first time in 2022.
The Rabat-based team will meet Chinese side Wuhan Jiangda on December 14 for a place in next year’s FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
The winner of that match will face European champion Arsenal in the semi-finals of the opening competition early next year in London.
