📌 Key idea:
So, how can a club that imposes such restrictions on itself remain competitive?
“That’s the challenge,” says fan Atxa. “Trying to stay competitive while staying true to your history, traditions and values.”
Since the club was founded 127 years ago, football has changed dramatically – but Athletic has resisted those changes.
“There were times when the results were not good and the social debate was open about the philosophy, whether to sign foreign players or continue to rely on local talent,” says Fragua. “This debate never led to change.”
“We’ve won two games and people forget that! Obviously the fans want us to win and be successful – but it’s more than that. It’s something about maintaining identity.
He added: “This means more commitment to the club’s values and identity rather than winning two or three extra matches every season.”
The club’s fans agree.
“We are convinced that this is a model that has stood the test of time,” says Atxa.

“Being the outsider in football will give Athletic Club a place in the global football scene,” says Gutierrez.
In a world of football increasingly driven by huge global transfers, The Athletic Club remains defiantly – and proudly – local.
What some may see as a limitation, The Athletic Club sees as a strength.
For them, success is measured not just by trophies, but by a shared identity, the values upheld and the generations of players who wear the red and white shirts – not just as footballers, but as one of their own.
