The United States intercepts the fifth sanctioned tanker while exercising control over the distribution of Venezuelan oil

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. forces have boarded another oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea, the U.S. military said Friday, as the Trump administration continues to target sanctioned tankers traveling to and from Venezuela.

The US Marine Corps and US Navy carried out the pre-dawn operation, taking part in a months-long build-up of forces in the Caribbean, according to US Southern Command, which declared “there is no safe haven for criminals” and also announced the seizure of the ship, called Olena.

Southern Command posted unclassified footage on social media of a US helicopter landing on the ship and US personnel searching the ship’s deck.

The tanker Olena is the fifth tanker seized by US forces as part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to control the distribution of Venezuelan oil products globally after the US ousted President Nicolas Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid.

A spokesman for Southern Command told The Associated Press that Navy and Marine Corps forces were supporting the Department of Homeland Security, which was in charge of the operation. The spokesman did not answer questions about whether the ship belonged to Venezuela or was subject to sanctions, and referred those questions to the Ministry of Justice and Homeland Security.

The U.S. Coast Guard declined to comment, telling the AP that it directs all requests for comment to the White House.
