The Wayne Rooney Show: Tottenham Hotspur in relegation battle, says former England striker

Tottenham Hotspur Former England captain Wayne Rooney says the team is in a relegation battle.

A 2-0 defeat to Manchester United extended a winless run in the Premier League to seven matches and leaves Thomas Frank’s side 15th in the table and just six points above the relegation zone.

Tottenham finished 17th last season, leading to the sacking of coach Ange Postecoglou, even after winning the Europa League.

“You have to say they are [in a relegation battle] “In their current form,” the former United striker said on The Wayne Rooney Show.

“West Ham have been in good form, Nottingham Forest are getting results here and there.

“You can’t think they’re not in the relegation battle where they are. I think they’ll definitely be watching their shoulders.”

Captain Christian Romero was sent off in the first half at Old Trafford for a late lunge on Casemiro, his sixth red card in a Tottenham shirt.

“I can see why it was given, but I think it’s a bit harsh,” Rooney said.

“Sometimes you lose your head sometimes. And I think he did that throughout his time at Tottenham.”

It came days after Romero’s social media post in which he appeared to criticize the people running the club – when he said it was “shameful” they only had 11 players fit for a 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Rooney added: “What doesn’t help are the comments made the previous week about the lack of players at Tottenham.”

“He obviously speaks his mind as well. But unfortunately, you have to back that up with performance when you speak out loud like that – and I don’t think he did that. All it will do is put more pressure on Thomas Frank.”

Rooney sympathizes with Frank, who coached Brentford for seven years before moving to London last summer to replace Postecoglou.

“I feel for Thomas Frank because he looks tired and looks like he’s 10 years old,” he said.

“That’s what the Tottenham job did to him in a short period of time. I hope they keep him because he’s a great coach, but I think it will be very difficult for them to do that.”

“And you don’t need your captain to be dismissed on a regular basis or be as outspoken as he was this week.”
