If Redknapp makes a sensational return to the club, Redknapp – who was this week named as a contestant on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity… South Africa reality TV show – would become the oldest manager to take charge of a Premier League club.
At 79 years and 12 days, Redknapp is two-and-a-half years older than current record holder Roy Hodgson was when he left Crystal Palace in February 2024.
Redknapp is currently the 10th oldest Premier League manager, having left his last top-flight job with Queens Park Rangers in 2015 – a month before his 68th birthday.
He will not be the only big name to suddenly return to training this season.
Martin O’Neill, 74, the former Leicester City, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest coach, is in his second interim spell with Celtic, while Neil Warnock, 77, was recently appointed interim coach of National League South side Torquay United.
Speaking to Radio 5 Live, former Premier League goalkeeper Rob Green said Redknapp’s return to Tottenham would be more “left-wing” than O’Neill’s appointment to Celtic Park.
“I think it’s beyond that for Tottenham, but that’s the kind of experience in player management [they need]He said. “He’s a different type of manager than the coaches we have now.
“Players have to have a charismatic leader to come in and lift the place up, and definitely make them feel better about themselves.
“[Redknapp] He is a manager who knows the club well. He certainly has a knack for getting the best out of people and making them feel good about themselves on the pitch.
“But at the moment, I don’t see anyone who has been out of the game in the country for this long,” he added. [coming back into management].
Earlier this season, Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Digid Spence were widely criticized for refusing to shake former manager Frank’s hand following a home defeat to Chelsea – behavior which former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel said Redknapp would not condone.
“Can you imagine a player not shaking hands after a match?” Friedel told BBC Sports World. “This player will not be in the team for the next match.
He added: “When they fired Thomas Frank, I was one of the people who said someone like Harry should be brought in, which is very similar to what Celtic did.” [with O’Neill] after [sacking] Wilfred Nancy.
“Harry would come in and say the right things.”
