Thomas Tuchel: England coach signs a two-year extension

When Thomas Tuchel took over as England coach, it looked like it would be quick.

The German has signed an 18-month contract to see him through England’s World Cup campaign.

He is then expected to return to club management.

The former Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich coach is likely to land several top jobs in the summer.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are just two clubs that would have put him on their radar.

Instead, he pledged his future to the Three Lions.

The England job has proven to be a perfect fit for the 52-year-old.

Ahead of the international matches in November, Tuchel said he enjoyed the “level of support and trust” provided by the Football Association. So we shouldn’t be surprised that he has now decided to stay.

Tuchel has always praised the English Premier League, but he has not been able to stay away from leading England in the local championship.

It’s good news for the FA too. The last thing she wanted was to deal with months of speculation over not just Tuchel’s position, but who would replace him.

Now he can plan for the European Championship on home soil on an ongoing basis, with a coach who has achieved results.

It is not without pitfalls, of course. If England perform poorly at the World Cup, questions will be asked about his future.

But Tuchel’s record so far means neither side sees this as a risky move.
