Thomas Tuchel says England players need ‘social skills’ to participate in the World Cup

“When the players felt they had the right group in camp, that they knew their role, why they were in camp, what was expected of them, and they had a feeling that the tournament could go on for another four weeks and they would be happy to stay together, they succeeded.

“It will be very important that we do not select only for talent, but also for what we need from the player.

“What are the player’s social skills, is he a good teammate? Can he support if his role is a support role? So, that’s where the focus comes into play.”

England have reached the European Championship final in the last two editions, and reached the World Cup semi-finals under Southgate in 2018.

They will face Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on June 17, at the start of what could be a long tournament.

“We will have a lot of players who we hope will play until May for international titles, they will play for national titles and we will demand a lot from them – the World Cup will demand a lot from them,” Tuchel said.

“Then we hope to spend six to eight weeks together if we make it all the way to the end.

“It’s going to take a lot of our social skills, how we come together as a group, and we need to get the nomination right.

“We need to find the right balance in the team and take it as an opportunity and see it as a dream come true to play in the World Cup, and we hope that playing a major role is nothing but a dream.”
