Thomas Tuchel signs a new England contract – but Fabio Capello’s blunder is a cautionary tale

He has proven to be a very independent man, especially with his decision-making around Jude Bellingham, leaving the Real Madrid star out of England’s squad for the friendly with Wales and World Cup qualifier against Latvia in October despite his desire to join after injury.

Tuchel is very focused on his mission, which is only to win the World Cup. No star system will be used, which is a mistake of its predecessors.

On the surface, this seems, as the saying goes, a “no-brainer.”

But what if England mirror the desperate efforts of Capello’s side in 2010?

It may take some work, but it couldn’t have been easier for them if they emerged from the group matches in the USA unscathed.

If everything does not go as hoped, the new contract will greatly impact both the FA and Tuchel.

Will this contract develop Tuchel and the FA against failure in the World Cup? Unlikely.

England have grown accustomed to quietly progressing through qualifying under a succession of managers. The competitive football championship remains the litmus test, and Tuchel has yet to pass.

This may, at least, provide some protection to the FA from rapacious advances being made in Tuchel’s direction from elite clubs, something that cannot be ruled out in the event of a successful World Cup in England.

Tuchel will also deviate from his own history if he stays on as England coach until the proposed date of 2028, making his tenure roughly four years.

He hasn’t been single for long since he spent five years coaching Mainz 05 between 2009 and 2014.

Tuchel left Borussia Dortmund in May 2017 after two years in charge. He stayed a little longer at Paris Saint-Germain, leading them to the Champions League final, before being sacked in December 2020.

He won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 but was sacked in September 2022 after just 20 months in charge. Tuchel was then at Bayern Munich for just over a year, and won the German League.

This would be great insight by the FA to keep one of the best and most successful managers in world football.

But the final verdict will have to wait until after the World Cup.
