With Alexander-Arnold not in the squad, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarel Quansah made his England debut at right-back against Albania in Tirana.

“Of course I have great confidence in Jarrel,” Tuchel said.

“I see his talent, but I see package. He’s tall, quick and strong in the build-up. He’s strong in the air.

He added: “He has played every minute for Leverkusen since the European Under-21 Championship, so at the moment he is a little ahead.”

Experienced players such as Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker are also on the sidelines, while Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been left out of the final squad.

Tuchel also resisted the temptation to call up striker Danny Welbeck, who has scored six goals in 11 Premier League matches for Brighton this season.

Asked if he would make a lot of phone calls, Tuchel said: “Yes, and I hate phone calls.

“It’s best when I use FaceTime. Then I see the expression, at least, and I feel the person. Or I need to visit them, or visit the training, or the training grounds.

“We can do group visits. We can do good [Bellingham] And Trent. And visiting clubs. We will contact some of them. let’s see.

“Listen, we just finished this camp and I think it’s important that I reach out to everyone, even the people we didn’t select on a regular basis to let them know where they are and give them honest feedback.”
