💡 **What You’ll Learn**:

TikTok, under new ownership in the United States, said on Sunday it had restored service after an outage last week that spoiled user experiences. The social network has more than 220 million users in the United States

The company blamed last week’s snowstorm, which caused an outage in the Oracle-run data center responsible for TikTok’s operations.

“We have successfully restored TikTok to normal after a major outage due to winter weather destroyed a major US data center site operated by Oracle. The winter storm led to power outages that caused network and storage issues at the site and affected tens of thousands of servers that help keep TikTok running in the US,” the company said in a post on X. “This has impacted many of TikTok’s core features – from content publishing and discovery to real-time display of video likes and view counts.”

In January, the US finalized the deal to create a separate entity for TikTok. A US-based investor consortium called TikTok USDS has taken a controlling stake of 80%, while ByteDance holds the remaining 20%.

After the deal was completed — which coincided with a snowstorm — users experienced glitches in features like publishing, in-app searching, slower loading times, and timeouts. TikTok noted that creators may not see any views on their posts until the issue is resolved. Later, the company said it was working to fix the problem, but outages continued, and users faced problems publishing content.

TikTok’s move to a new ownership structure, coupled with app bugs and user experience glitches, has been beneficial for some other social networks. Mark Cuban-backed short video app Skylight, built on the AT protocol, saw its user base soar to over 380,000 users in the week the deal was completed. Upscrolled, a social network created by Palestinian-Jordanian-Australian technologist Issam Hijazi, also rose in the App Store rankings to reach second place in the social media category in the United States. The app was downloaded 41,000 times within days of the TikTok deal being completed, according to analysis firm AppFigures.
