💡 Main takeaway:

It was arguably the most popular music meme of the year: Is masked Liverpudlian rapper EsDeeKid actually Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet in disguise? Now the speculation has been put to rest, as Chalamet has jumped on an unexpected remix of EsDeeKid’s song 4 Raws.

Chalamet posted a video of the track on his social media, rapping alongside EsDeeKid in a series of scenes, from a cramped kitchen to a housing estate.

“I’ve got supermodel bitches in Peckham / I’m Ryan Reynolds in Wrexham,” Chalamet sings in lyrics designed to appeal to a UK fanbase ahead of the release of his new film Marty Supreme on Boxing Day, which also received several shoutouts.

He also references his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, with the lyrics: “It’s Timothée Chalamet chilling, trying to get 100 million, the girl got a billion,” before adding: “I’m having fun, just sexting / My dick is small and twitchy.”

He continues: “My life’s an opera, look at the Oscars / Look at the compilations, look at the movies / Look at the threesome girl who’ll choose me / Look at the guy who hates me and wants to sue me,” he raps quickly over the song’s distorted beat, with the song shared tens of thousands of times within a few hours of being posted.

If a full version of the track was released, it would likely send 4 Raw shows back up the UK charts. The track rose to No. 27 before being overtaken by Christmas Songs, but it’s just one hit track from EsDeeKid, who has gone from relatively unknown to the UK’s most popular rapper in the space of just a few months.

His song Century entered the top 10, while his album Rebel was the world’s most-streamed rap album on Spotify in November, and remains in the top 20.

He never gives an interview and hides his face from the public, apart from an occasional glimpse of his eyes, leading to speculation that he was actually Chalamet in disguise. Asked by BBC Radio One’s Greg James earlier this month about the supposed connection, Chalamet replied: “Everything will be revealed in due course.”

Chalamet performed his version of Bob Dylan’s songs for the biopic A Complete Unknown, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He also says he’s a fan of the UK rap scene, this week naming rapper Fakemink alongside Susan Boyle as the Britons he most admires.

Chalamet is expected to win the Oscar for Marty Supreme, after losing out this year to Adrien Brody in The Brutalist.

“By the end of this film, my head was swinging from side to side as if it had been struck by gongs,” The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw wrote in a five-star review of Marty Supreme. It was voted the fifth best film of the year by The Guardian critics even before it was released.
