Tommy, another book-tracking competitor on Goodreads, has shut down

Tome, a book tracking app and book lover community, is closing its doors.

Built on the back of BookTok’s large, influential community — creators who discuss and review books on TikTok — the app offers readers a place to chronicle and rate their books, get recommendations, and even add images of things like favorite quotes or memes, or share playlists that match a book’s sentiment.

The app is now one of many catering to a growing demographic of Gen Z readers who create book-related content on social media — a group that started primarily as women promoting their favorite “romance” titles, but has since grown to include readers of all types.

But the space to leverage that community to take on the still-dominant book-tracking champ, Goodreads, may be a bit crowded now. Tome, for example, had to compete against many other book trackers with a similar vibe, such as Fable, Margins, Bookly, StoryGraph, Bookmory, Pagebound, TBR, and others. (Not to be confused with the TBR app and book recommendations site TBR, which will also be shutting down in June!)

In a blog post announcing the closure, Tommy alludes to the competitive landscape, noting that his community of 100,000 readers couldn’t reach the scale needed to keep up with the cost of running a social app that supports memes, GIFs, and video. Ultimately, the service “was not financially able to continue operating,” the company said.

Tommy said the app will officially shut down on May 29, at which point the app will stop working as the servers will be shut down. The company said the site will also be closed that day.

The post also advises Tome users how to download their data, including posts, photos, and a spreadsheet of their reading updates.
