Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle: Eddie Howe relishes ‘special call’ after fans’ response

Nick Woltmad and Yoan Wisa have been left on the bench – just a few months after Howe spent £124m on strikers.

And it tells its own story as the visitors lined up without a recognized striker for the second league away game in a row.

Instead, Anthony Gordon was tasked with leading the line on the road once again after Howe found courage from the opening half-hour of his side’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.

Gordon put Newcastle ahead at Anfield that night, but it was still a bold decision.

However, Gordon, Elanga and Harvey Barnes drove the press aggressively to keep the ball clear as they chased down the Spurs defenders and quickly advanced with the ball.

There were still occasions where Newcastle were screaming for an illegal player in the box to put an end to a number of crosses from Elanga.

But the speed of Newcastle’s attacking line caused Tottenham problems and Gordon’s dancing feet set up Ramsey’s winner.

Remarkably, this was just Newcastle’s third away win in the league this season due to travel fatigue.

Newcastle were often poor, giving up more points (19) than any other team in the division.

But this was an evening in which they “really inspired each other” after a difficult few days.

“They used that in a positive way and strengthened relationships,” Howe added.

“It made us all look inward and look at what we are doing and how we can do it better.”
