Rumblings of discontent began before the match, when around 100 fans took part in a ‘Change for Tottenham’ protest, which appeared to have been partly calmed by the £35m signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and an open letter from chief executive Vinai Venkatachem assuring concerned fans of the club’s ambition.

In fact, Frank had a relatively positive week. At least until his team started playing.

Frank played a key role in ensuring Tottenham’s victory over Aston Villa against Gallagher, then added respected Dutch coach John Heitinga – part of Arne Slott’s backroom team when Liverpool won the Premier League last season – as assistant coach.

But there is a persistent undercurrent of discontent at Spurs that shows no signs of abating, the mood not helped by a league home record that now reads 11 games played, six lost and only two won.

Crysencio Summerville’s early goal added to the pressure. But Spurs did not help themselves with a desperate lack of urgency that actually played on the fans’ nerves and discontent.

Shortly before half-time, Pedro Porro took a throw-in deep in the West Ham area and, amid pleas for pace, the defender took 30 seconds, which seemed like a lifetime, before West Ham took possession.

On the hour mark, with regular time and an equaliser, the Spurs fans exploded when the ball was played aimlessly at the back in the manner of a team defending a healthy lead.

Cristian Romero’s equalizer provided false hope, but Wilson scored the winner as Tottenham’s goalkeeper found Guglielmo Vicario vulnerable again and wanting to take a corner, and his complaints of being fouled were rightly ignored.

On the other hand, West Ham celebrated hard after ending a series of 10 matches without a win in the league, which plunged them and their coach Nuno Espirito Santo into a crisis. The old quip about a ‘Doctor Tottenham’ prescribing a cure for every struggling club’s ills has been put to rest once again.

“Tomorrow we will train in silence, and we will work hard again,” said captain Romero, who went straight into the tunnel after the final whistle. “In midweek we have another big match.

“At this moment it is a disaster for us. We played well sometimes, sometimes poorly. We have to work hard and come back again. It is a difficult moment for us. We are not the best on the pitch.”
