Tottenham have recorded seven wins and two draws in 12 Premier League matches, and made their ambitions clear during the January transfer window.

“I wouldn’t have joined if the club’s ambitions didn’t match mine,” he said.

“Since its arrival, ownership has invested significantly in the team – in players, staff, facilities and infrastructure.

“They want this team to constantly compete in Europe and challenge for titles domestically. This takes time, but the support is there.”

The club has signed Norwegian internationals Julie Blakstad and Signe Gaubset as well as Swedish duo Hanna Vik and Matilda Nelden from PK Hacken.

Meanwhile, highly-rated Japanese striker Maika Hamano has joined on loan from defending champions Chelsea until June.

Speaking on BBC Women’s Football Weekly, former England striker Ellen White and former Scotland international Jane Beattie agreed that Tottenham’s transfer business reflects a club trying to challenge the status quo.

“They are in the race for the Champions League places for sure,” Petit said.

“Why not? He doesn’t want to put pressure on the players and what you say internally and externally can be two different things.

“Internally, they will know the quality they have. They can compete with anyone.”

White said: “Tottenham have recruited well and we are seeing a lot of players from Norway and Sweden.

“With the physicality of those leagues, they will be up to speed in that aspect. It’s something he will be very familiar with, having been around and working with a number of those players.”
