Captain Christian Romero says it’s “disgraceful” Tottenham There were only 11 players available for Sunday’s 2-2 home draw Manchester City.
Tottenham lost nine players to injury in 2026, sold last season’s top scorer Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace and only signed two senior players in the January window.
This is the second time in recent weeks that Romero has spoken out on social media, having written in a now-edited post in January that members of the club hierarchy “only show up when things are going well, to tell some lies.”
“All my teammates gave a fantastic effort yesterday, they were amazing,” Romero, who had to withdraw due to illness during the 2-2 draw, wrote in an Instagram post on Monday.
“I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – which is unbelievable but true and shameful.”
“We will continue to show up and take responsibility to change this, work hard and stick together. All that remains is to thank you all for being there and always supporting us, the fans.”
Tottenham signed Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and 19-year-old Brazilian defender Souza from Santos in the January window.
They added 18-year-old Hearts striker James Wilson on loan on the transfer deadline day, but he will be part of their Under-21 squad.
In response to Romero’s post last month, manager Thomas Frank said the 27-year-old Argentine centre-back should keep some things “internally”.
Tottenham wanted to sign Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyu in January but he joined Manchester City instead, with Frank saying on Friday that the club had “done everything we could”.
The Dane added: “The fans want the best for the club, just like me, the owners, the staff and the players. Everyone wants the best for the club.”
“But the transfer window is not a manager’s football, unfortunately. It’s not. It would be a lot easier, but also a bit more boring.”
Tottenham, who won the Europa League last season, are currently 14th in the Premier League and sit closer to the relegation zone than the European qualification places, despite reaching the last 16 in the Champions League.
