Tottenham’s relegation battle: Is the north London club too big to go down?

The club will undoubtedly face a major financial hit if it starts the 2026-2027 season in the second division.

Income from broadcast, match days and commercial income will be cut, while the latest wage bill stands at around £254m versus the Championship average of £38m.

There will also be a knock-on effect on transfers, not only in the quality of players the club can attract, but also in the £337m in installment payments owed to existing players.

BBC Sport’s own analysis points to an estimated drop in annual revenues of around £261m, with football finance expert Kieran Maguire saying: “In 2023-24, most Tottenham made an average of £84 per fan per match, the highest figure in the Premier League.”

“This number will face significant downward pressure, not from crowd size, but from what clubs can realistically charge.

“Business clients who pay a premium for a home match against Liverpool or Arsenal are unlikely to pay the same amount for a visit to Swansea.

“There is also significant financial vulnerability in terms of sponsorship. Certainly the first shirt deal with the AIA, worth around £40m a year, contains relegation clauses that could halve its value.”

“The equipment deal with Nike, estimated at £30m a year, is likely to take a lesser hit.

“Tottenham fans will continue to buy replica shirts regardless of division, but there will likely be a reduction. Sponsorship agreements and wider partnerships across the club will face similar issues.”

He added: “For a club with Tottenham’s ambitions and financial size, relegation would not be just a short-term sporting setback. The economics of English football make recovery a multi-year project.”
