“We had two strong matches against them [in recent years]But she didn’t deliver that winning performance. All of these experiences, including today, should be put into an 80-minute show.

“The players can take confidence from how well they have trained this week. We have to build that cohesion very quickly. There is no reason why we can’t. The players will be ready for it and have the belief that they can do it.”

With the USA match falling outside the designated Test window, Scotland were without key players in Finn Russell, Blair Kinghorn and Ben White, but they were ruthless in the way they dismantled their opponents.

Darcy Graham and Jamie Dobbie each scored hat-tricks and Duhan van der Merwe helped himself with two tries in his 50th match. Dylan Richardson, Kyle Rowe, Stafford McDowall, George Horne and Ollie Smith also scored.

“Right away, the players were very composed, which is difficult to achieve in a week’s training,” Townsend said.

“We asked for effort and physicality and we got that for most of the game. We were aggressive and fundamentally disciplined and the players worked hard for each other.

“We know that next week will be much more challenging and the team will change a lot as well.”
